Orthopaedic Surgical Procedures at ProMedica

Our orthopaedic specialists perform a variety of advanced orthopaedic procedures. Your provider will work with you to create a customized treatment plan that best supports your needs and goals. Procedures we commonly perform include:

Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip replacement surgery allows your surgeon to replace damaged parts of your hip joint with new artificial parts.

Your surgeon will provide you with an individualized treatment plan and joint replacement recommendation. Types of hip replacements include:

  • Total hip replacement.
  • Anterior approach hip replacement.
  • Hip resurfacing.
  • Replacement revision surgery.

Knee Replacement Surgery

An artificial knee replacement allows your surgeon to replace damaged parts of your knee with artificial parts.

Your surgeon will provide you with an individualized treatment plan and joint replacement recommendation. A total or partial knee replacement will be recommended based on the condition of your joint.

Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Shoulder replacement surgery allows your surgeon to replace the damaged shoulder joint with an artificial implant.

There are several types of shoulder replacements. Your surgeon will determine which type you will have. Types of shoulder replacements include:

  • Total shoulder replacement.
  • Partial shoulder replacement.
  • Shoulder resurfacing.
  • Reverse total shoulder replacement.

Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is an outpatient procedure used to look at, diagnose and treat problems inside a joint. During the procedure, surgeons reconstruct ligaments or cartilage and remove loose bone or cartilage from the joint. This procedure can be performed on the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, hip or wrist.

Rotator Cuff Repairs

Rotator cuff repair surgery can help restore the function and flexibility of your shoulder. It is a great option to relieve pain that can’t be controlled by other treatments.

Spine Surgery

Spine surgery is a delicate process. It can require extensive entry to repair a curved spine or a minimal incision to repair a herniated disc. Conditions of the spine that often require surgery include:

  • Herniated or bulging disc
  • Broken vertebrae
  • Spinal fusion
  • Deformity surgery (e.g., correcting spine curvatures caused by scoliosis)
  • Chronic lower back (sacroiliac joint/SI joint) pain

What To Expect at Your First Visit

To diagnose your condition, your orthopaedic provider will examine your range of motion and do a physical exam. During the exam, they will check for:

  • Growths or cysts around joints.
  • Misalignment in your skeleton.
  • Muscles that are not equal on both sides of your body.
  • Swollen joints.

Be prepared to share your health history and any current health conditions.

Additional Tests

Your doctor may order additional tests to help them diagnose or better understand your condition. These may include:

  • Blood tests to pinpoint conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, cancer and other health concerns.
  • Bone scans to measure how much bone tissue needs to be removed or replaced.
  • Computed tomography scans (CT or CAT scans) to produce detailed images of your body.
  • Gait analysis to spot abnormalities in your body structure, see how your limbs align and check your joint rotation.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging  (MRI) to create pictures of what’s happening inside your body.
  • Reflex response to assess how quickly your joints and brain respond to stimulus.
  • X-rays to check for fractures or tumors.

Diagnosing Your Joint Condition

Your provider will then give you an official diagnosis and recommend a treatment plan, which may include surgery.

If your treatment plan includes surgery, our team will help you prepare for your procedure and recovery. This will include health and wellness guidelines, as well as ways to make sure your home is set up for healing.

Surgery Recovery Support

ProMedica offers a variety of resources and support to aid in your recovery. Your surgeon will recommend programs that you might benefit from. Discover some of our offerings below.

Pain Management

Your pain management plan after joint replacement surgery can help you heal. It may include in-office procedures, physical and aquatic therapy, and medicine.

Physical Therapy

After a joint replacement, our physical therapists help you maximize your skills and abilities. They are available at both the hospital and in an outpatient setting.

Swing Bed Program

This program allows you to stay at the hospital to receive skilled nursing care rather than transferring to a nursing center.

Wound Care

Your surgical team will give you detailed instructions to care for your incision (cut) site safely. ProMedica Wound Care is here to help if you experience issues with healing.

Prepare Your Body and Home for Surgery

You can lower your risk of complications by being in the best possible health before your procedure. Stay at a healthy weight, eat nutritious foods and exercise. Ask your doctor about nutrition and fitness programs available through ProMedica.

During recovery, you may not be able to move around as much as usual. Think through your daily routines and make sure you have the support and resources you need to recover safely and fully heal. Be sure to review all education materials provided by your surgeon prior to your surgery.
