What is breast density?
Density refers to the amount of glandular tissue in the breast. If the breast is made up of mostly fat, then it’s considered less dense. Dense breasts are made up of mostly glandular and fibrous tissue.
Why is density important? Breast density may make it difficult for mammograms to detect breast cancer. Additionally, it’s known that women who have denser breasts have an increased chance of developing breast cancer.
How do you know if you have dense breasts? All mammograms performed at ProMedica locations are evaluated for the degree of breast tissue density. If your mammogram results show that you have dense tissue and may benefit from additional screening, these results will be reported to you and your doctor.
