Why Trust Russell J. Ebeid Children's Hospital for My Cancer Care?
Cancers that affect children are very different from the cancers that affect adults. Our knowledgeable team will create an individualized cancer care plan just for your child that includes access to the support and resources you’ll each need throughout their cancer journey. You will be included along every step of the way.
Our cancer center is a member of the national Children’s Oncology Group, giving our young patients access to the newest cancer protocols and research activities. Our robust research program allows your child access to the latest clinical trials.
ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children’s Hospital’s pediatric hematology/oncology program treats patients with the following diseases:
- Blood disorders (such as anemia, white blood cell disorders, and platelet disorders)
- Sickle cell disease and thalassemia
- Bleeding disorders (including hemophilia, von Willebrand’s disease, and platelet disorders)
- Clotting disorders (thrombophilia)
- Pediatric tumors (including neuroblastoma, sarcoma, wilm’s tumor, leukemia, lymphoma, and brain tumors)
With comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for the above diseases, our cancer center unit is isolated from the rest of the hospital to create a comfortable environment for our patients’ loved ones. Our pediatric hematology/oncology program also has access to Russell J. Ebeid Children’s Hospital’s network of pediatric support services, allowing us to connect your child to all the care they need from diagnosis to treatment and beyond. In addition, our program is connected to a larger network of care through ProMedica Cancer Institute, providing even more access to cancer experts and resources.

Cancer Clinical Trials
A cancer clinical trial is medical research in which people participate as volunteers to test new methods of cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment.
Some cancer patients may fear that enrolling in a clinical trial means they chance receiving no cancer treatment. That’s not true. Clinical trials must – at the very least – provide today’s best standard of care for your cancer. But, the new treatment that the trial is testing could provide better care – improving your quality of life and chances of survival.
Our expert cancer research team pays close attention to monitoring each patient’s treatment and recovery. Many treatments today are the results of past clinical trials.
The Child Life program at ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children’s Hospital seeks to support children and families coping with the emotional impact of childhood illness. Education, play, arts and crafts, and special events are just some of the services our program includes. Learn more.
Holistic therapies and relaxation techniques to heal the mind, body and spirit are available to complement your child’s conventional cancer treatment.

My Journey Bead Program
Children who are diagnosed with cancer experience a unique journey of challenges and joys. The My Journey Bead Program helps children tell their story using colored beads as meaningful symbols of the many steps taken throughout their treatment course.
When cancer treatment begins, your child is given a length of twine strung with beads that spell his or her first name. Children then receive different colored beads that acknowledge every moment in their journey, including procedures, chemotherapy, surgery and many other significant milestones.
