Joint Commission Certification in Asthma Care
Less than a dozen organizations in the country have achieved this disease-specific certification. ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children's Hospital's inpatient and ED services, Pediatric Pulmonary Clinic and Russell J. Ebeid Children’s Primary Care at Center for Health Services also have earned Joint Commission certification for their outpatient pediatric asthma programs.
This dual-certification, inpatient and outpatient, is a symbol of quality that demonstrates a commitment to excellence in asthma services and dedication to following nationally recognized guidelines.
Childhood asthma is a major problem in the Toledo area as identified by the most recent community health needs assessment. While the national average for children ages 0-17 is 8.6 percent, in Toledo:
- Asthma affects 11 percent of children ages 0-5
- Asthma effects 17 percent of children ages 6 to 11
The goal of our program is for children (and their parents or guardians) to understand and manage their asthma so the frequency and severity of their symptoms can be minimized, and so they don’t need to go to the ER or be admitted to the hospital for treatment.
Children receive tailored education to help them learn:
- Their personal asthma triggers (like allergies, smoke, exercise, cold air)
- The difference between their medications and how to take the right one at the right time
- Controller medicines to decrease symptoms and prevent asthma attacks
- Rescue medicines for sudden attacks
- Personalized “Asthma Action Plans” to monitor and manage their symptoms, including key physician contacts, that can be shared with daycares, schools and athletic coaches

Consistency of Care is Vital
Consistency of education makes a vital difference in helping kids understand and comply with their action plans. Our entire inpatient and outpatient pediatric asthma team of doctors, respiratory therapists, nurses, asthma educators, clinical pharmacists and social workers collaborate to fully integrate care.
This highly coordinated approach means children and families have one set of instructions to follow in and out of the hospital. If children require an inpatient stay, members of the asthma team call 5 days after discharge to see how they’re doing. They follow up again after one month.
It’s no wonder TCH was praised by surveyors for its commitment to helping children and their families understand and manage asthma.
