Swing/Rehab bed services are now available at ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital and ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital. Swing beds are skilled nursing level inpatient beds that are offered to patients recovering from surgery or illness. Under the swing bed program, patient care “swings” from acute care services to skilled nursing services.
The swing bed program is designed to benefit patients who are in need of short-term restorative care after being discharged from the hospital. For such patients, ProMedica Total Rehab offers in-house rehabilitation services. This is beneficial because it gives patients a chance to heal and regain strength close to home with professional hospital and rehab staff.
Jack Poling, RN, Director of Inpatient Services at Defiance Regional Hospital stated, “The swing bed program has allowed one patient to receive post-surgical care in her hometown three times since April.” Poling reiterated that the swing bed program has played a crucial role in her recovery.
Swing beds are approved by Medicare and Medicaid and most commercial insurances are accepted. Should a patient become acutely ill, he or she would have instant access to hospital services and would be readmitted as an acute hospital patient.
Gerry McCollum, RN, Director of Cardiopulmonary, Med-Surgery and ICC at Fostoria Community Hospital said, “Patients appreciate and trust that they are able to receive rehabilitative care in the security of a hospital environment with immediate availability of medical services.”
McCollum also shared some of the updates that are being made at FCH to accommodate swing bed patients. “We are in the process of a significant remodel to update our Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy gyms and our Patient and Family Activities Room to better meet the long term needs of our patients.”
