John P. Pigott, MD, FACS, currently serves as Chief Innovations Officer/Strategic Business Development for ProMedica and ProMedica Innovations, where he works with thought leaders from across the health system to turn ideas into results that generate a measurable impact in the areas of life science technologies, patient outcomes, and new revenue streams. He is also a member of ProMedica’s executive strategy team. Dr. Pigott has designed, developed and implemented recognized and award winning medical innovations, specifically within the field of vascular surgery. He is the founder and Chief Science Officer for VentureMed Group and Infinity Angioplasty Balloon company, both medical device companies involved in the treatment of peripheral artery disease. He is the author of many articles and presentations, and holds numerous patents, primarily in the life sciences field.
Dr. Pigott is President of the Northwest Ohio Tech Fund II, a Board of Trustees Member for BioOhio, and a Board member of Kapios Health. He is also a former EY Regional Award and National Finalist for Entrepreneur of the Year, a national and international venture capitalist, and a lead developer in establishing the Northwest Ohio ESP and Tech Fund II through state of Ohio Third Frontier. He has helped to attract more than $50 million to Northwest Ohio, resulting in local job creation and economic development. He also serves as a consultant to numerous multinational medical device companies, conducts national and regional device training programs, and has participated in more than 50 clinical trials.
As a board-certified vascular surgeon at Jobst Vascular Institute (JVI) and ProMedica Toledo Hospital, Dr. Pigott serves as a faculty member of the ACGME-accredited Jobst Vascular Fellowship Program. He is also a clinical professor of surgery at the University of Toledo Medical Center. Dr. Pigott received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio, completed his surgical residency at Akron City Hospital, and completed his fellowship in vascular surgery at the Mayo Clinic.
Justin Hammerling, AVP of Innovations, manages the daily operation of the ProMedica Innovations Center and the ProMedica Innovations team. Working in partnership with the executive management team, Justin creates leading-edge solutions in support of ProMedica’s mission and goals while providing best-in-class services and expert resources to life science entrepreneurs and inventors.
An expert strategist and accessible leader, Justin also serves as President for Kapios Health, a HIT company. In this position, Justin is known for driving growth and profitability, as well as his expertise in developing and delivering technology solutions for hospitals, health systems and medical practices. Justin understands healthcare structures and the complimentary function of leading-edge technology in healthcare. He is dedicated to working with inventors to develop their ideas and help them successfully market their products to the medical marketplace.
Justin earned his BA and Masters degrees from the University of Colorado, as well as an MBA from the University of Toledo.
Kara Whitaker serves as Executive Assistant to the Chief and AVP of ProMedica Innovations. Kara has 17 years of administrative experience in the legal and not-for-profit sectors.
Prior to joining ProMedica Innovations, Kara served for more than a decade as a paralegal with several Toledo-based estate planning firms. She subsequently joined Community Teaching Homes as an Executive Assistant to the Executive Director, Dr. Nancy Harvey. Kara pursued Executive Assistant work in order to participate in an innovative, results-driven and community oriented entrepreneurial environment. Kara applies creativity, focus, and a strong work ethic to both her work for ProMedica Innovations and her many volunteer activities oriented towards enriching and serving the Toledo community. She holds a degree in early childhood education from the University of Toledo.
James is an Investment Associate who works with companies seeking capital from venture funds managed by ProMedica Innovations. He works with entrepreneurs to help their companies with business and financial strategy throughout the investment process through to exit. He conducts due diligence, works with investor syndicates, makes recommendations to the Investment Board, manages transactions and post investment relations with companies in the ProMedica Ventures and Northwest Ohio Tech Fund II portfolio.
Since joining ProMedica he has worked on numerous debt and equity financings of startup and growth stage companies as well as multiple business development projects. James believes investors are key for the success of a new company not only as a capital partner but also as a strategic partner and enjoys working with promising companies with a great management team. James holds an MBA in Finance from the University of Toledo.
Jon Klotz is an Executive in Residence at ProMedica Innovations, partnering with team members in assessing the potential of proposed business ventures and in developing commercialization plans for those selected for funding. In this role, he works with entrepreneurs to establish business plans, develop management organizations, project revenues, and assist with presentations to funding groups. Jon has considerable experience with government agencies who sponsor non-dilutive grants. His focus on life sciences enables him to select the consultants most capable of designing a regulatory pathway.
Jon brings considerable startup experience to his role, including a thorough understanding of the nuances and challenges that confront entrepreneurs. He has served as a Chief Financial Officer for large companies, and has been a senior member of large consulting firms. His educational background includes an undergraduate degree from George Washington University as well as graduate work at Harvard Business School.
Clint Steigerwalt is a Project Manager who works with local inventors and community members to advance unique healthcare-related concepts and promote economic development. He bases his work on the belief that innovation and collaboration are keys to success and that local leaders know what is best for their communities. Clint has worked with inventors on medical devices and health information technology to advance their concepts through the commercialization process. Clint has completed courses in Blanchard Leadership Training and The Innovation Academy by The American Hospital Association, and he holds both an MBA from The University of Toledo and a BS from Ohio Northern University
Judy Damman serves as Finance Manager, working closely with the Finance team at ProMedica Innovations. In this role, she manages accounting and reporting duties for several start-up companies, assists with the ProMedica Innovations accounting, and participates in regular audits. She also handles expense and wage reporting to the Ohio Development Services Agency for the NW Ohio ESP. Judy joined the Innovations team from iHeartMedia’s Northwest Ohio Broadcast Group/Defiance-Napoleon Market where she had served as business manager of a group of 4 radio and streaming stations, and one TV station. During her 22 year career with the nationwide media company, Judy performed all accounting, reporting and month-end close duties.
Colin Joseph is an Investment Analyst who performs due diligence on prospective investments and supports portfolio companies with enhanced management services. Colin is responsible for screening and generating deal flow by networking with both companies and other investors. Colin believes that building lasting companies starts with a management team's ability to execute on a vision, and the job of venture investors is to identify teams accordingly. Colin holds a BA in both Finance and Supply Chain Management and is currently pursuing his MBA with a focus on Finance and Leadership from University of Toledo.
Dan Cassavar is a Project Manager. He is responsible for the invention disclosure process, product development and commercialization outreach. Dan meets with inventors to discuss their invention ideas and to gain an understanding of what the invention is, does, and how the inventor would like to see their idea come to fruition. He has filed five inventor patents, currently in the outreach phase, and is working with industry leaders to secure licensing contracts. Dan has an extensive background in innovative product development within the renewable energy sector. As the Supply Chain/Production Manager for a Toledo-based renewable start-up, Dan worked alongside electrical engineers to develop revolutionary solar inverter systems. Dan has completed courses in The Innovation Academy by The American Hospital Association.
Hollie Flanner is a Sales and Marketing Associate who works with inventors to take their Health Information Technology (HIT) innovations to market through strategic development of outside sales goals and objectives. Hollie believes that medical technology innovations will provide better care for patients, and is passionate about the work she does for ProMedica Innovations. Hollie is a trained marketing professional who offers a unique mix of technical skills. Hollie has worked at taking three major HIT inventions to market that have successfully garnered national attention.
Hollie holds a BA in Communication with a minor in Information Technology and E-commerce from the University of Toledo.
Emily Kuhn is an Innovation Strategist who engages primarily with employees and high interest groups sharing the purpose of ProMedica Innovations and the resources available to life sciences inventors. After spending over a decade participating in and leading innovation initiatives for Fortune 500 companies, Emily knows that anyone can be an innovator if they are given the right tools and a clear pathway forward. Emily helps connect people who have identified an unmet need and who have an idea for a potential solution with the tools and resources needed to determine the commercial viability of their concept.
Emily is responsible for planning a wide variety of events, most notably the annual ProMedica Innovations Summit which attracts 300+ regional participants. Her organizational skills, attention to detail, creative imagination, conceptual design ability and contagious enthusiasm have given the event a “not to be missed” reputation.
Emily holds a BS in Marketing from Miami University.
