Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is an abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia) – the most common kind of heart rhythm problem. At least 3-million Americans live with AFib, reports the American Heart Association.
Our team of ProMedica Physicians electrophysiologists diagnose and treat AFib using cutting-edge technology right here in Toledo, Ohio, at ProMedica Toledo Hospital. If you think you might be at risk for AFib, find a ProMedica AFib specialist in the Toledo area who can help you determine whether you are experiencing atrial fibrillation.
So, what is atrial fibrillation?
Normally, your heart contracts and relaxes to a regular beat – evenly pumping blood from the upper chambers (atria) of your heart to the lower chambers (ventricles) and out to the rest of your body. This happens with every heartbeat.
During AFib, the electrical signal that starts your heartbeat is jumbled. It causes the atria of your heart to quiver (fibrillate) – contract and relax fast and irregularly. Your atria becomes out of sync with the contractions of your ventricles. Because the blood can’t be efficiently pumped out of your atria and into your ventricles, blood can pool in your atria.
The danger? This pooling blood could form a blood clot that escapes the heart and lodges in an artery leading to your brain. This causes a stroke.
AFib increases your chance of having a stroke by more than five times. If you have AFib, know the warning signs and symptoms of a stroke.
