ProMedica Flower Hospital has been at the heart of compassionate, innovative and advanced cancer care in our region for four decades. Since 1975, when Flower Hospital opened its doors to the Sylvania, Ohio, community with an oncology department including one treatment unit and one simulator, our multidisciplinary team of oncology doctors, nurses, clinical staff and administrative professionals have been dedicated to providing our community with the highest quality cancer treatment, support and education available.
In 1987, the inpatient cancer unit at ProMedica Flower Hospital was opened by Charles Cobau, MD and Bahu Shaikh, MD. That same year, ProMedica Bixby Hospital joined the Toledo Community Clinical Oncology Program (TCCOP).
On Jan. 1, 1996, a major milestone in ProMedica Cancer Institute’s history occurred when Flower Hospital merged with ProMedica, becoming what is known today as ProMedica Flower Hospital. At this time, the cancer services at Toledo Hospital were merged into the Flower Hospital cancer program with Flower Hospital selected as the main site for the regional system’s cancer treatment services.
In 2007, the cancer care facility became Hickman Cancer Center, a department of ProMedica Toledo Hospital, on the campus of ProMedica Flower Hospital, named for our generous benefactors Sally and David Hickman.
A legacy of caring for cancer patients and their families in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.
ProMedica Cancer Institute is committed to ensuring that the communities and patients it serves have access to the care and resources they need close to home.
Over the past 20 years—and continuing today—ProMedica Cancer Institute has expanded its cancer center locations to meet the growing need for high quality and specialized cancer care in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. The newest cancer center, ProMedica Dorothy L. Kern Cancer Center in Fremont, Ohio, opened its doors to patients in January 2016.
Throughout its network of cancer care centers, ProMedica Cancer Institute has several specialty clinics, including:
- ProMedica Breast Care at Toledo Hospital, selected as a Breast Imaging Center of excellence (BICOE) by the American College of Radiology, provides the latest technology and state-of-the-art breast screening and diagnostic services for complete, accurate, and prompt diagnosis and treatment.
- The Lung Clinic at Flower Hospital provides prompt and personal care for patients with known lung cancer or with lung nodules requiring further evaluation.
- The Cardio-oncology Clinic at Flower Hospital includes a team of cardiologists and hematologists/oncologists who collaborate to prevent, monitor and treat cancer patients with a history of heart disease or who develop heart complications during treatment.
In southeast Michigan, The Hickman Cancer Center at ProMedica’s Bixby Hospital has played an integral role in treating and supporting cancer patients in Lenawee County and the surrounding area since 1991. In 1999, Bixby Hospital also became an affiliate of ProMedica.
The community strongly supports ProMedica’s services in Lenawee County, which have been located in the Grace Christman Medical Building since 1991, with medical and radiation oncology available in one convenient location. In 1995, a gift from the Hickman family provides funding for the renovation of ProMedica Bixby Hospital’s oncology center and it is renamed Hickman Cancer Center.
