Heal with Hyperbaric Pure Oxygen Therapy
Have a wound or infection that won't heal? Hyperbaric medicine, also known as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO), is the medical use of oxygen at a higher than atmospheric pressure level. HBO is used to increase the amount of oxygen in your bloodstream. This oxygen-rich blood is then carried to your body tissues.
HBO helps wounds, especially
infected wounds, heal more quickly.
What does HBO treatment do? HBO delivers 100 percent pure oxygen under a specialized pressure chamber to increase the amount of oxygen in your blood. This increased pressure allows your lungs to gather up to three times more oxygen than with normal air pressure.
What conditions does HBO treat? Although some disorders are primarily treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, it's most often combined with other types of medical treatment. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an approved medical treatment for many types of conditions including:
- Chronic wounds
- Carbon monoxide poisoning, smoke inhalation, and cyanide poisoning
- Decompression sickness
- Diabetic wounds of the lower extremities
- Osteomyelitis (refractory)
- Radiation tissue damage
- Air or gas embolism
- Crush injuries, compartment syndrome, and other acute traumatic ischemias
- Gas gangrene
- Necrotic soft tissue infections
- Skin grafts and flaps (compromised)
- Thermal burns
How do you know if hyperbaric oxygen therapy will help you? HBO can potentially help heal your wound or condition. Talk to your doctor about your potential benefits. Your doctor will explain how many sessions are right for you and what other treatments might be combined with this treatment.
Will my insurance cover HBO? Medicare, Medicaid, and most major insurance providers cover the cost of therapy when it's used in accordance with criteria established by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. HBO therapy provides direct cost savings with successful high percentage resolution of difficult and expensive disorders, as well as hospitalization length-of-stay and recovery time reduction.
