Susan J Hulsemann, MD - Director
Program Director, Susan Hulsemann, M.D., brings nearly 30 years of experience in caring for patients, families and educating family medicine residents. Dr. Hulsemann received her medical degree from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. She further received internship training in Internal Medicine and General Surgery at the University of Ottawa and a transitional year at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. She completed a family medicine residency at Mercy Health Partners in Toledo, Ohio. Dr. Hulsemann became involved in medical education following residency and served as Assistant Director, Associate Director and the Program Director for Mercy Health Partners Family Medicine Residency Program in Toledo.
Dr. Hulsemann has practiced medicine in Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina and Ontario, Canada. She has completed fellowships through the American Academy of Family Physicians National Institute for Program Director Development and the University of Michigan Faculty Development Institute. She has served in the Canadian Navy as a flight surgeon and medical officer. Dr. Hulsemann graduated from Leadership Monroe and has a heart for the citizens of her community, having developed the first free primary care clinic within the county, where she serves as Medical Director.
Dr. Hulsemann is honored to be a part of the ProMedica Monroe Family Medicine Residency Program in Monroe, Michigan. Her vision for this program is clear and simple: “We are committed to developing skilled, compassionate family physicians whom I would be pleased to have providing for the health care needs of my own family.”
Nicholas Schenk, MD - Associate Director
Dr Schenk completed his undergraduate at DeSales University graduating with a BS in Biology. He attended medical school in Philadelphia at Thomas Jefferson Medical College. He complete residency at Washington Hospital near Pittsburgh and then went on to complete a one year women’s health and OB fellowship at Cone Women’s Hospital in Greensboro, NC. He went back to Washington and worked as faculty for one year doing full spectrum family medicine including inpatient, outpatient and obstetrics. He joined ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital’s Family Medicine Residency in September of 2019 as Associate Program Director.
Dr. Schenk’s passions are for women’s health, obstetrics and procedures. He performs c-sections and enjoys teaching outpatient procedures in women’s health as well as musculoskeletal medicine and minor skin procedures.
William Murdoch, MD, FAAFP, RFPHM – Associate Director
Dr. Murdoch did his undergraduate studies at Hope College, in Holland, Michigan and received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Murdoch completed his residency training at the WSU/Crittenton Family Medicine Residency in Rochester Hills, Michigan and joined the faculty after graduation, eventually becoming the assistant program director.
Dr. Murdoch’s passion is teaching inpatient medicine to family medicine residents. He was one of the first family physicians nationwide to receive the Recognition of Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine from the ABFM/ABIM. He currently serves as a teaching hospitalist and associate director of the ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital Family Medicine Residency.
Dr. Murdoch is also the Program Director for the Transitional Year
Laura Grima, MD, MBA – Associate Director
Dr. Grima graduated from Wayne State University – Detroit in
1999 and completed her Family Medicine Residency at Oakwood (Beaumont) Hospital
Family Medicine Dearborn. Dr. Grima was employed in private practice prior to
joining ProMedica. Dr. Grima completed a Master’s Degree of Business
Administration from Michigan State University Broad College of Business in
2013. She is currently an outpatient preceptor at the ProMedica Monroe Family
Medicine Residency Clinic. She oversees the nursing home longitudinal experience
for the Family Medicine residents. Dr. Grima recertified for the American Board
of Family Medicine in 2018.
Charan Cheema, DO, Community Preceptor
Dr. Cheema grew up in Southeast Michigan and graduated from University of Michigan with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Her passion for medicine and helping others led her to medical school. She graduated from Michigan State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2012. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Dr. Cheema is board certified in Family Medicine and OMT (osteopathic manipulative treatment). She has been in practice since 2015. Dr. Cheema has worked in outpatient, nursing home, urgent care and ER settings. Her medical interests include medical education, pediatrics, women's health, geriatrics, in-office procedures, OMT, and preventive care. She is a community preceptor and enjoys working with the staff, residents and preceptors at Monroe Family Medicine Residency Center.
Michael Tilson, MD – Community Preceptor
Dr. Tilson is from Southeast Michigan and graduated from Wayne State University for his undergraduate studies. He received his medical degree from American University of Antigua College of Medicine and completed his family medicine residency program at Western Reserve Health Education in Youngstown, Ohio in 2019, where he served as their Chief Resident. He became board-certified in spring 2019. His medical interests include pediatrics, geriatrics, women's health, sports medicine, in-office procedures, preventive evidence-based care and medical education.
