At ProMedica, we are combining clinical nursing expertise with information technology to make our patients' health information as accurate, consistent and accessible as possible. We have integrating these two fields for the benefit of our patients through a specialty called informatics.
The nursing informatics specialty, according the American Nurses Association (ANA), integrates nursing science, computer science and information science to manage and communicate data, information and knowledge in nursing practice. Duties within this specialty are performed by an informatics nurse. Informatics nurses perform different roles in their day-to-day work. These roles include the clinical nurse analyst and the clinical informatics specialist.
Our clinical nurse analysts work closely with IT on the clinical and nursing aspects of implementing an electronic health record (EHR) that meets both technology and clinical needs system-wide. Our clinical informatics specialists work in ProMedica acute care hospitals, helping hospital nursing staff and IT work together to implement electronic health records – such as bedside charting, bar-coding and medication administration. The informatics specialist also provides training and education to clinical staff to ensure consistency and coordination of patient care.
As part of the ProMedica Nursing Informatics Council, your role includes being able to identify and collaborate on nursing informatics issues, system workflows, design and education initiatives that support and improve health information documentation, including electonic health records. The council supports the recommendations and actions of the Nursing Leadership Collaborative.
