When a baby is born prematurely or with a severe illness, the normal progression of parenting is interrupted, causing many parents to feel lost and confused. Many parents worry that they will miss important bonding experiences. While medical equipment and monitors may make holding your baby difficult, our team provides support to help you bond and care for your child.
As the parent, you are the most important person in your baby’s life, and we encourage you to be active in his or her life while in the NICU. Doctors and nurses will walk you through the treatment process and show you how to hold and care for your infant.
A lactation specialist is also available to help mothers pump and maintain their milk supply until their baby is able to breastfeed. ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital also offers two special transition rooms to help families adjust to caring for their babies before they are released.
