The Kemerer Family
Ken and Mary knew when they got married that they wanted to have children one day. But due to an early childhood disease, Mary was not able to carry a child to term. The Kemerers selected a surrogate mother and soon the surrogate was carrying twins!
But much to their surprise, the Kemerers’ twin sons, Gary and Jacob, arrived 16 weeks early, weighing less than two pounds each.
Sadly, Jacob’s lungs were not developed and there was nothing that could be done to save his life, but his brother Gary continued to fight.
With the expertise of the neonatal team at ProMedica Toledo Children's Hospital, Gary continued to grow stronger. After three months in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit, Gary was able to leave the hospital and go home with his parents. By that time, he had tripled his birth weight!
Today, Gary is developing at a normal rate. The bond between the Kemerers and the staff at Toledo Children's Hospital remains as strong as ever. Ken and Mary believe that the hospital’s nurses and physicians are heroes and truly saved Gary’s life.
