The Renaissance: Highlights
The Renaissance of The Toledo Hospital and Toledo Children’s Hospital was a major
step in the rebirth of our facilities. As with the renaissance period, this
campus renewal provides patients, families and staff with feelings of
enlightenment and hope. The atmosphere created is one of humanism with respect
for each individual, and one of reflection by incorporating the unique characteristics
and history of the city of Toledo.
Site
The sense of arrival to the campus has been transformed with
the creation and realignment of ProMedica Parkway, formerly Oatis Avenue, into a tree-lined
boulevard. The new site design simplifies pedestrian and vehicle traffic in and
out of parking garages and surface lots, providing clear and obvious wayfinding.
The creation of two separate and distinctive entry points for
Toledo Children’s Hospital and The Toledo Hospital provides patients and visitors
with exceptional comfort and convenience in age-appropriate environments.
Architecture
In the spirit of renewal and vitality, the new 10-level
building is light, reflective and thoughtful. Elegant, refined details
utilizing timeless materials of concrete and glass create an experience that
represents the hospitals’ commitment to state-of-the-art medical services
combined with compassionate, personalized care. The colorful, curvilinear
canopy and entry for Toledo Children’s Hospital reflects a child’s playfulness,
yet integrates into the overall design.
Interior
The interior design guiding principle is based upon the idea
of discovery, for both children and adults. The design embraces this philosophy
and is represented with the healing elements of air, water, sun and earth. Icons
representing the elements are integrated into the design of the flooring,
graphics, hand-painted murals, illuminated art glass and patterns in the Terrazzo
flooring.
As one travels through the facility, the story
of the icons and their significance are unveiled gradually, promoting the idea
of discovery. The subtle backdrop for the interiors is punctuated with moments
of dramatic color, light and texture that create memorable focal points along
the public pathways.
The atrium contributes to the environment,
offering a lasting first impression. It spans two stories and provides a sunny
and cheerful gathering space. The atrium also promotes easy wayfinding between
the existing patient care buildings and the new tower.
The spacious patient rooms were designed to:
- provide outdoor views with floor-to-ceiling glass
- provide overnight sleeping accommodations for families
- create zoned and efficient spaces for patients, families and caregivers
- reduce stress levels and promote healing with warm colors, non-institutional lighting, and appropriately scaled and comfortable furniture
- provide wireless Internet access
Art
The art collection throughout the facility was
specially selected to promote a dynamic environment while supporting the
hospitals’ vision of creating an atmosphere of healing and wellness.
Signature pieces of art that echo the healing
elements found throughout the building have been placed in both hospital
lobbies. In The Toledo Hospital lobby, “The Elements” by Teresa Camozzi is a
statuesque and stately representation of nature. “Life in Motion,” by Helma
Groot, is a whimsical fabric mobile that hangs from the ceiling of the Toledo
Children’s Hospital lobby.
Hand-painted murals by local artist Carol Sicha grace walls
throughout the building and depict the healing elements while adding warmth to
the space.
