Toledo Children's Hospital
Pediatric Hematology /Oncology
Toledo Children’s Hospital pediatric hematology/oncology
program is located within the Debbie Brass Children’s
Cancer Center, where the physicians and staff are specifically trained
to treat children from birth through their young-adult years. Treatment
encompasses all hematologic disorders, including sickle cell disease,
bleeding disorders and cancers.
Cancer patients are treated on national cooperative trials,
through Children’s Oncology Group, which gives local access to the
newest cancer protocols and research activities.
The bleeding-disorder patients are treated through the
Northwest Ohio Hemophilia Treatment Center, the only state-designated
center in the region for patients with bleeding disorders. This is also
the only center in Ohio performing isotopic synovectomy, a non-surgical
procedure that reduces bleeding in the joints.
Toledo Children’s Hospital offers
a six -bed unit with a full range of inpatient and outpatient services
for children and young adults. The patient care program also offers
support for the psychosocial needs of patients and their families.
Hickman Cancer Center at Bixby Medical Center
Bixby Medical Center is a leader in diagnostic and treatment
technology. Using this advanced technology and incorporating years of
professional expertise, the caring staff of the Hickman Cancer Center
(HCC) provides comprehensive outpatient oncology services.
The scope of oncology services offered at the HCC spans both
radiation and medical oncology services. The lastest technology for
radiation therapy involves 3-D conformal treatments or IMRT. This
allows the patients to receive optimal treatments that are specific to
the diseased area while at the same time preserving the healthy
surrounding organs and tissues, thus reducing the affect to those areas
and preventing long term side affects.
HCC offers Brachytherapy for the treatment of prostate cancer.
This process involves the Implant of radiation therapy seeds directly
to the prostate. The implant of radiation seeds is an effective measure
to treat prostate cancer without having to undergo surgical removal of
the prostate.
In addition to the high level of technology and treatment
options, HCC also offers clinical trials for both radiation and medical
oncology treatment options. These approved clinical trials are
available to qualifying cancer patients and provide leading edge
treatment options and help to find new, safe and effective
treatments.
More health problems are being diagnosed through the use of
medical imaging. Imaging procedures permit a look inside the body
without doing the exploratory surgery that was necessary in the past.
Hickman Cancer Center provides a full range of diagnostic and screening
mammography services to assist in the early detection of breast
cancer.
In addition, Hickman Cancer Center's services include:
- X-ray
- Fixed, closed 1.5 T - MRI
- Ultrasound
- DEXA scan
- Mammography
- Nuclear medicine
- CT-16 slice technology
- Stereotactic breast biopsy
- PET-CT

Stereotactic System is one of the latest advances in radiation therapy,
offering added precision and control.
As the area’s largest provider of radiation services, the
Hickman Cancer Center at Flower Hospital serves as the central hub of
ProMedica Cancer Institute’s services and highly-specialized
technologies.
The Breast Care Center on the campus of Flower Hospital provides a full
range of digital diagnostic and screening mammography services,
including an R2 ImageChecker Computer Aided Detection System to assist
in the early detection of breast cancer.
Genetic testing
A genetic testing program for cancer is also available to patients with
multiple risk factors. The program includes a dedicated medical
director and nursing staff who have completed education and training in
cancer genetics.
In addition, the Hickman Cancer Center offers
the following treatments, diagnostic tools and
services:
- HDR (High Dose Radiation) Therapy: Advanced technology
designed to deliver higher doses of radiation directly into certain
tumors
- Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT)
scanner, which provides exceptionally detailed images that can reveal
the development of disease or tumors much sooner than other
technologies.
- Outpatient medical oncology services, such as chemotherapy,
to support cancer patients in their healing journey
- Infusion services to support oncology as well as non-oncology
patients requiring infusions that do not require an inpatient
stay
- Software programs that assist in treatment planning and
patient management. Eclipse is a comprehensive treatment planning
system that simplifies complex radiation therapy planning for each
patient on a case-by-case basis.
