About the Institute

In February 2007, the ProMedica Cancer Institute publicly announced a $42 million commitment to cancer care that significantly enhanced
cancer treatment and research options for residents of northwest Ohio.
This announcement featured an affiliation with the nationally renowned
Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute at the Detroit Medical Center. As
a result of the collaboration with Karmanos, ProMedica medical teams
and patients have access to advanced research and protocols,
multidisciplinary approaches to treatment and educational
opportunities. For more information about Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Center, please visit

The ProMedica Cancer Institute features:
- A new state-of-the-art Hickman Cancer Center on the Flower
Hospital campus that offers convenient, comforting surroundings for
patients to receive care.
- The launch of multidisciplinary cancer care teams to offer
the most comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan
available.
- Digital mammography technology at ProMedica radiology
facilities in every region. This comprehensive early-detection
investment significantly improved the quality and accuracy of breast
cancer screenings. Digital mammography offers more accurate results for
women ago 50 or under and women with dense breast tissue. In addition,
digital technology offers reduced exam times.
- Tomotherapy to deliver extremely precise radiation therapy to
patients while protecting healthy tissue. Tomotherapy gives physicians
the ability to verify tumors and adjust a patient’s position before
treatment is given. Tomotherapy is available at the Flower Hospital
campus, and is one of only three units in the state of Ohio. Trilogy
Linear Accelerator and Stereotactic System, one of the latest advances
in radiation therapy, is offered at Flower Hospital. ProMedica was the
first health care system in Ohio to offer this state-of-the-art
technology, which delivers higher doses of radiation to smaller areas
over a shorter period of time and can be used to treat very small
lesions and tumors that are close to vital structures – while avoiding
or minimizing damage to the patient’s surrounding organs and healthy
tissue.
- A second linear accelerator at Flower Hospital was upgraded
in 2006 and includes a treatment planning system to provide custom
radiation therapy programs.
- A permanent positron emission tomography (PET)/computed
tomography (CT) scanner, used primarily for diagnosing and staging
cancers, on the Flower Hospital campus. Weekly PET/CT service is also
provided at Bay Park Community Hospital, Defiance Regional Medical
Center and Fostoria Community Hospital. This powerful diagnostic
imaging tool provides exceptionally detailed images that can reveal the
development of disease or tumors much sooner than other technologies.
- Ebeid Hospice Residence, a free-standing hospice care
facility on the Flower Hospital campus that provides care for patients
with later-stage cancer.
