Take a tour of a patient room at The Toledo Hospital

The Toledo Hospital Bariatric Program is dedicated to providing a surgical weight-loss option for adults facing severe obesity. Led by surgeon Patrick White, MD, FACS, our team of nurses, physician assistants, dietitians, social workers, physical therapists and patient educators offers a comprehensive, supportive pre- and post-surgery program for patients.

Bariatric surgery is the only proven method that results in lasting weight loss. The number of bariatric procedures in the United States has soared in the last decade. In fact, from 2000-2004, there has been a five-fold increase in bariatric procedures in the U.S. Nearly 250,000 bariatric procedures were performed in 2004.

At The Toledo Hospital, we perform laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. This operation is the most frequently performed in the United States to induce weight loss. Most patients will lose about 39% of their excess weight in three months; 54% in six months; 66% in nine months; and 75% in 12-18 months post-surgery. A weight loss of 60-70% is generally maintained.
