As the largest provider of adult inpatient psychiatric care in our region, Defiance Regional Medical Center (DRMC) offers integrated adult psychiatric services in the Coping Center. Because this adult inpatient psychiatric unit is located within an acute care hospital, there is access to a full range of medical and mental health services. Each patient is provided a safe, therapeutic environment with private rooms and treatment options that are based on individual needs. The experienced team of psychiatrists, nurses, licensed social workers and other mental health professionals provides an intensive and widely varied range of treatments for patients, while offering support to families and caregivers. Treatment approaches include cognitive therapy, group psychotherapy, psycho-education groups, activity therapy, medication adjustment, electroconvulsive treatment (ECT), family involvement as appropriate, and outpatient services. The facility offers several levels of care, including an intensive care unit, general psychiatric unit, partial hospitalization program, intensive outpatient program and emergency evaluation through DRMC’s Emergency Center.

The ICU team is committed to returning critically ill patients to their optimal level of health in a timely manner while meeting the physical, educational and psychosocial needs of each patient and their family.

Defiance Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Center is the area's only certified trauma center. Open 24 hours, seven days a week, DRMC's Emergency Center provides a full continuum of care for injured and ill patients. Features include:

ProMedica UrgentCare provides care to patients with non-emergent, after-hour medical needs including sprains, earaches, and sore throats. Open 365 days a year, its hours are 3 – 10 p.m. on weekdays and 1 – 10 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

Accredited Chest Pain Center
Patients who come to Defiance Regional Medical Center with chest pain can be assured that they have highly skilled physicians and nurses, combined with state-of-the art equipment, to determine the cause of the patient’s chest pain and begin appropriate treatment. DRMC became an accredited Chest Pain Center in May 2005, designated by the Society of Chest Pain Centers. DRMC was the 15th hospital in the State of Ohio to receive this prestigious accreditation.

Sam Hornish Family Heart Center
In Defiance Regional Medical Center’s sophisticated combination angio/catheterization suite, specialists are able to learn important facts about a patient’s heart, such as the amount of blockage in coronary arteries and diseases of the heart valves. Cardiologists and nurse clinicians manage your care before surgery, during recovery and in the rehabilitation process.
To further its commitment to quality care, Defiance Regional Medical Center has a highly trained cardiac care staff to provide a wide variety of heart-related testing and services. Services are available such as:
- Cardiac catheterization
- Cardiac rehabilitation
- CT Coronary Angiography
- Diagnostic cardiology
- Echocardiogram – an ultrasound of the heart
- EKG – measures the heart’s electrical activity
- Event monitoring – 30-day EKG recording by event
- Holter monitoring – 24-hour EKG recording

Cardiac Rehabilitation

The cardiac rehabilitation program at Defiance Regional Medical Center is committed to helping you improve your cardiovascular health. A primary goal of the cardiac rehab program is to help you develop healthy behaviors that will become a way of life and improve your overall health.
A comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program is available at Defiance Regional Medical Center. A team of experienced professionals will assist you in the development of an individualized cardiac rehabilitation program if you have recently experienced a cardiac event or have been identified as needing to reduce your cardiac risk factors. Your program will consist of the following:
- Physician-supervised treadmill test
- Personalized exercise prescription
- Continuous EKG heart monitoring during exercise
- Group education
- Individualized risk factor modification
- Ongoing contact with physicians involved in your care
- Individual and group education and support
- Discharge evaluation and recommendations
Either you or your physician may schedule your appointments for outpatient cardiac rehab. A written physician referral is required. Medicare and most health insurance providers may cover the cost of a cardiac rehab program. Please call ahead to verify your coverage. If you do not have insurance coverage and cannot afford the services, please contact the cardiac rehab staff to discuss other options.

Rehabilitation Services top
Total Rehab at Defiance Regional Medical Center

DRMC’s Total Rehab staff works closely with patients who are coping with or recuperating from a physical challenge or injury. Through recurrent and closely monitored therapy sessions, patients regain movement, manage their pain more effectively, rebuild their confidence and overcome physical challenges.
- Physical Therapy (PT) – PT promotes healing and injury prevention by helping patients minimize pain and discomfort, regain movement and rebuild their confidence and motivation toward recovery.
- Occupational Therapy (OT) – OT assists people with permanent and temporary disabilities to gain independence and achieve a better quality of life. OT supports patients to restore or improve physical abilities, promote behavioral changes, adapt to their surroundings and learn new skills.
- Aquatic Therapy – Aquatic therapy helps patients to manage their pain with increased range of motion, reduced chance of re-injury, rapid return to normal activity and a safer, more efficient workout.
- Speech Therapy – DRMC’s certified speech and language pathologist assists children and adults who are dealing with speech delays or stuttering to communicate more effectively. Patients recovering from a stroke or who have suffered a head injury also benefit from working with the speech therapist. Others who would find speech therapy advantageous include patients with muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s disease and autism.
- Pediatric Rehabilitation – DRMC offers specialized therapy for even our youngest patients in a new dedicated pediatric rehab unit. Therapy services are provided for children from birth through age 21 to minimize disability and maximize independence. DRMC therapists facilitate motor, sensory and communication skills, teach families home programs, and assist with adaptive equipment needs.

A multitude of respiratory services are available at Defiance Regional Medical Center. The pulmonary department performs pulmonary function testing, provides educational services for patients with respiratory and breathing difficulties, and is active in the community implementing tobacco cessation programs.
Sleep Disorder Center

The Sleep Disorder Center at Defiance Regional Medical Center is staffed by pulmonologists who are board-certified in sleep medicine. Sleep studies for conditions including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy are among the services performed. Following diagnosis, treatment can be started during the same visit and evaluations and adjustments can be made for the specific needs of each patient during follow-up visits.
