Nancy Ten Eyck's Story

Mom was our patient. But we took care of an entire family.

Nancy Ten Eyck was rushed to Bay Park Community Hospital’s Emergency Center with severe abdominal pains. When a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm required numerous surgeries in the next few days, Nancy’s family became concerned. And the Bay Park staff recognized that concern.

Before Surgery: Preparing Your Home

You may want to make a few simple changes around the house before surgery. Make life easier and safer after surgery. Reduce household hazards now. Also, limit the amount of reaching and stair climbing you’ll have to do. By planning ahead now, you’ll have less to worry about during recovery.

Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

If one or more of your coronary arteries (the vessels that carry blood to your heart muscle) are blocked, blood can’t flow to the heart muscle. In this case, the heart muscle may die (heart attack). Coronary artery bypass surgery creates a path for blood to flow around a blockage and helps prevent a heart attack.

The History

In April 1998, ProMedica Health System and local architects began to work together to form the plan and design for what is now BPCH. The state-of-the-art community hospital was to include a physician office building, along with the standard areas many patients/visitors of a community hospital have come to expect. The primary design of the facility would be a complete health care facility embodying a customer-focused, family-focused, cost-competitive environment.

The vision for the community hospital was to be based on some guiding principles:

  • Create something different, a community amenity
  • Establish an aesthetically pleasing and calming campus
  • Lower operating costs
  • Produce an efficient operation to be a leader in the marketplace

BPCH was designed to be a unique blend of structure and setting. The concept was to bring the outdoors in, and help patients and visitors feel a sense of harmony with nature. The design embraces the trend toward natural and environmental influences in the health and healing continuum. The exterior was purposely designed to avoid resembling a hospital. The warm and inviting style reflected in our design complements our mission of providing family-focused patient care. Our approach to care focuses on the special needs of each patient while recognizing the support and concern of family members and friends.

Groundbreaking took place on May 5, 1999, followed by a grand opening of the hospital on October 28, 2001, with more than 8,000 area residents touring the $84 million facility. It was widely believed to be one of the most heavily attended hospital openings in recent history.

Today, BPCH continues to meet the needs of patients and families east of the Maumee River through a diversity of services and programs. The success of the state-of-the-art hospital is certainly not attributable to one individual or even one department. It is a direct result of the community responding to a new choice for health care.
