Maternal-Fetal Medicine

419-291-3604

Each year, the maternal-fetal medicine department at The Toledo Hospital cares for high-risk maternity patients from communities throughout the region. Maternal-fetal medicine provides the highest level of care to achieve the best possible outcomes for high-risk pregnancies. Medical support is provided for women with high blood pressure, abnormal bleeding, cardiac problems, diabetes, trauma and premature delivery risks.

Available 24 hours a day, our multidisciplinary team includes: physicians and nurses who specialize in maternal-fetal medicine; certified nurse midwives; a perinatal social worker; a certified diabetic educator; neonatologists (newborn specialists); lactation (breastfeeding) consultants; nutritionists; respiratory therapists and parent instructors.

Additional services include: high-risk pregnancy evaluation; consultation services that help to identify problems and potential treatment options; 3D/4D ultrasound; genetic diagnosis; fetal therapy; prevention and management of prematurity; and services for patients with pregnancy losses.

In conjunction with The Toledo Hospital’s obstetrics and labor/delivery departments, the Toledo Children’s Hospital newborn ICU has been licensed by the Ohio Department of Health as a Level III regional perinatal unit, which cares for the sickest and most high-risk patients, and is the highest level of accreditation possible.

Maternal Transport

ProMedica Air and Mobile Transportation Network—ProMedica Health System’s fleet of helicopters and mobile ICUs—transports high-risk maternity patients to The Toledo Hospital for specialized care by the maternal-fetal medicine division. ProMedica Air and Mobile also transports high-risk newborns to Toledo Children’s Hospital’s newborn ICU.
