Kids Are Special!
Toledo Children's Hospital is a 151-bed facility serving the hospitalization needs of children and adolescents. Toledo Children’s Hospital is the region's only accredited hospital exclusively for children, as we successfully pass the accreditation process set forth by The Joint Commission – demonstrating our commitment to providing our patients and families with the highest quality of care.
In 2009, the physicians, pediatric nurses and other staff of Toledo Children's Hospital:
- cared for 4,706 patients
- performed 743 inpatient surgeries
- performed 1,586 outpatient surgeries
- treated 25,672 children in the Emergency Center
Our patient care tower features a 60-bed newborn intensive care unit (NICU) with individual patient rooms and a calm, peaceful atmosphere resembling the sheltered environment of the womb.
The facility was also designed to accommodate the unique needs of pediatric cancer patients in the Debbie Brass Children’s Cancer Center. Featuring a family-centered experience, the pediatric hematology/oncology unit offers isolation from other hospital areas, fun and whimsical wall murals, and advanced monitoring systems.

Toledo Children’s Hospital Philosophy of Care
Patient- and Family-Centered Care is an innovative approach to caring for children that strengthens the partnerships between patients, families and health care providers. Parents, guardians and families know a child best and are a child’s primary source of strength and support. Working together as a team with these key people, Toledo Children’s Hospital improves safety and quality of care by maintaining the following core concepts:
- Dignity and Respect: We listen to and honor patient and family choices and decisions. Patient and family knowledge, values, beliefs, and cultural backgrounds are incorporated into the planning and delivery of care.
- Information Sharing: We communicate and share complete and unbiased information with patients and value the personal information families provide about their children. Patients and families receive timely information in order to effectively participate in care and decision-making.
- Participation: Patients and families are encouraged and supported in participating in care and decision-making at the level they choose.
- Collaboration: We enable leaders to collaborate with families on policy and program development, implementation and evaluation of health care services, as well as professional education and delivery of care.
