Compassionate Care for Children with Cancer

A cancer diagnosis can be devastating, especially for children and their families, but state-of-the art and compassionate pediatric cancer care is offered close to home at the Debbie Brass Children’s Cancer Center on the campus of ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital. The center is dedicated to providing outstanding, specialized cancer care for children, while helping them and their families navigate the treatment process.

At the center, our multidisciplinary team treats all hematologic disorders, including sickle cell disease, bleeding disorders and cancers. We offer a range of inpatient and outpatient services for children and young adults. Additionally, we understand that care encompasses far more than the physical needs of your child. With that in mind, we offer support for the psychosocial and emotional needs of patients and their families through our child life program.

When your child needs treatment for cancer or other hematologic disorders, you can trust that our staff is well equipped to handle her or his unique requirements for care. Toledo Children’s Hospital has received the American College of Surgeons Accreditation with Commendation as a Network Comprehensive Cancer Program and the American College of Radiology Accreditation.

“My Journey” Bead Program

Children who are diagnosed with cancer experience a unique journey of challenges and joys. The “My Journey” bead program helps them tell their story using colored beads as meaningful symbols of the many steps taken throughout their treatment.

When children begin cancer treatment, they are given a length of twine strung with beads that spells their first name. Children then receive different colored beads that acknowledge every moment in their journey, including procedures, chemotherapy, surgery, and many other significant milestones. Here are the colors awarded for each milestone in a child’s journey:
