Advanced Cancer Care for Women

When it comes to women’s cancer detection and treatment, the ProMedica Cancer Institute is dedicated to providing excellent care. We want you to feel comfortable, informed and empowered to make the best health care choices possible. Our facilities offer a range of women’s cancer care services. We provide everything from digital mammography, which monitors your breast health and provides early detection of tumors, to cancer genetics testing, which determines your cancer risks if you have a strong family history of cancer.

ProMedica Toledo Hospital Breast Care Center

Breast care is important for women no matter what their age. The American Cancer Society recommends that all women have at least one baseline screening mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40. At 40, you should begin to have a mammogram once a year. And if you are 40 or older and have risk factors, you should discuss an appropriate screening program with your doctor. After all, mammograms can usually identify an abnormal breast lump as much as two years before you can detect it in a self-exam. Perhaps this helps explain our insistence on the importance of early detection.

The ProMedica Toledo Hospital Breast Care Center is the region’s premier imaging facility devoted exclusively to patients with breast health concerns and issues. It provides a range of clinical breast care screenings and diagnostics featuring the latest technology, including digital mammography, dedicated breast MRI, breast ultrasound, image-guided breast biopsy and Molecular Breast Imaging.

If you have breast cancer, rest assured; you’re in excellent hands. Our team of experts includes breast cancer specialists such as oncologists, surgeons and pathologists.

Learn more about the ProMedica Cancer Institute

The ProMedica Toledo Hospital Breast Care Center is home to the region’s first dedicated breast MRI system. Breast MRI does not replace digital mammography; rather, it works in conjunction with routine mammography and provides valuable information for the detection and staging of breast disease. In addition, we offer seamless coordination of care means time between screening, diagnosis and treatment is significantly reduced. Our team consists of board-certified, fellowship-trained radiologists, highly trained technologists and specialized registered nurse breast health navigators.

The Center has been named a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. This elite distinction signifies that the Breast Care Center meets the highest standards of the radiology profession and has demonstrated excellence in breast imaging by achieving accreditation in mammography, breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided biopsy and stereotactic breast biopsy.

Our breast health navigators and mammography coordinator are specially trained registered nurses to guide and educate patients to ensure follow up, timely diagnosis and coordination of treatment.

Because our services are housed in a centralized site, patients benefit from a coordinated and efficient program. In fact, immediate appointments are available. Additionally, breast ultrasounds and biopsies are often performed on the same day in order to fully address a concern in a single visit. Most patients leave with results or a biopsy the same day.

The center is at Harris McIntosh Tower, ProMedica Toledo Hospital, 2121 Hughes Dr., 1st floor. Contact us at 419-291-2131.

Frequently Asked Questions about Digital Mammography

You want and deserve the best possible care. That is why we’ve invested in state-of-the-art digital mammography technology at many of our ProMedica locations. While we continue to learn about breast cancer, one thing remains clear: the importance of early detection. Digital mammography has significantly enhanced the quality and accuracy of breast cancer screenings. It offers more accurate results for most women, including those over 50 and women who have dense breast tissue.

Does a digital mammogram expose me to less radiation than a film mammogram?

It does. Not only does a digital mammogram use less radiation than a film mammogram, it reduces the need for retakes.

Is a digital mammogram better for patients who have dense breasts?

Yes. A digital mammogram is especially effective for women with dense breasts.

What is digital mammography?

Unlike film-based mammography, digital mammography uses computers and specially designed digital detectors to produce an image that can be displayed on the technologist’s high-resolution computer in a matter of seconds. The radiologist can then magnify, adjust and enhance the image to detect any abnormalities. This gives you the best diagnosis and less chance of having a retest. There is no waiting for film to develop, which often means less waiting time. Also, the fact that it’s digital allows the images to easily be shared throughout ProMedica.

When should I get a mammogram?

The American Cancer Society recommends that all women have at least one baseline screening mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40. At 40, you should begin to have a mammogram once a year. If you are 40 and older and have risk factors, you should discuss an appropriate screening program with your doctor. Remember, mammograms can usually identify an abnormal breast lump as much as two years before you can detect it in a self-exam.

Hysterectomies performed with the da Vinci Surgical System offer many benefits to women over other types of hysterectomies.

If your physician has recommended surgery, be sure to ask if robotic surgery at ProMedica Bay Park Hospital, ProMedica Bixby Hospital, ProMedica Flower Hospital, ProMedica St. Luke's Hospital and ProMedica Toledo Hospital is right for you.
