ADRIAN, Mich, Dec. 13, 2011 – Patients receiving radiation treatment at the Hickman Cancer Center now have access to new, cutting-edge technology available at ProMedica Bixby Hospital, made possible by donations to the hospital’s foundation.
The new equipment, called an on-board imager (OBI), represents a $500,000 investment in patient care at the center. The OBI is attached to the radiation machine (or in clinical terms a linear accelerator) and will capture low dose digital images to more accurately pinpoint the treatment area.
“We feel very fortunate to be able to have an OBI here to support our patients’ radiation therapy,” said Ryan Jin, MD, Hickman Cancer Center oncologist. “This kind of equipment is found at the nation’s leading cancer centers and now our patients can benefit from it. We can use the high quality images generated by the OBI to precisely position the patients on a daily basis to improve the accuracy of radiation treatment.”
Ensuring that patients have access to comprehensive care, including a range of state-of-the art services and equipment, like the new OBI, is one of the criteria that earned Hickman Cancer Center the prestigious Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons in 2010. The hospital also received a three-year accreditation with commendation from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
“Our promise to care for our patients means that we are always looking at how to optimize treatment methods. This is why we purchased this equipment,” explains Darcel Shankle, Hickman Cancer Center oncology manager. “As part of ProMedica’s Cancer Institute our goal is to give patients local access to the resources they need to win the fight against cancer.”
Hickman Cancer Center is part of the ProMedica Cancer Institute which offers comprehensive cancer care to patients across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. Its programs are accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer®. This approval indicates that the Institute’s programs and services have met and exceeded a rigorous set of clinical care and programmatic standards for providing quality cancer care to patients.
