ProMedica Toledo Hospital Trauma center Receives Level I Re-Verification

TOLEDO, Ohio, April 13, 2011 – The trauma center at Toledo Hospital (TH) has been re-verified as a Level I trauma center by the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). It is the highest national recognition that a trauma center can obtain and confirms that the facility is equipped to handle the most critically-injured patients. The hospital has maintained its Level I status since 1999 and is one of only 14 Level I trauma centers in Ohio. Last year, more than 1,700 injured patients were treated at its trauma center.
In order to receive the verification, TH had to meet essential ACS criteria to ensure it is achieving the highest standards for trauma care. The hospital was also evaluated by a team of surgeons experienced in the field of trauma. Other requirements included having 24/7 access to medical staff and surgeons who are specially trained in trauma care, and fully-staffed intensive care units to support the following critical care services: orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology, and internal medicine. TH’s trauma services staff also provide ongoing education in the community about injury prevention.
“This achievement validates our strong commitment to providing patients with high quality and innovative care for every aspect of injury, from prevention to rehabilitation,” says Kevin Webb, TH president. “It also recognizes the outstanding team of medical professionals and specialists who consistently provide superior patient care to patients.”
Established by COT in 1987, the Consultation/Verification Program promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide the hospital resources necessary to address the trauma needs of all injured patients.
