Garden Grocer to Open at The Flower Market

TOLEDO, Ohio, Nov. 8, 2013 – To help provide residents near ProMedica Toledo Hospital with convenient access to fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, The Flower Market will begin carrying healthy grocery items at its 3890 Monroe St. store.
The Flower Market is in the midst of a lower-income area of Toledo designated by the federal government as a food desert because there is no supermarket within a half mile carrying affordable healthy food. ProMedica decided to add an array of healthy food items at supermarket prices to The Flower Market, and it is applying to the federal government to accept benefits from both the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program.
To celebrate the opening of The Flower Market’s Garden Grocer, a health fair will be held Fri., Nov. 15, from 2 – 5 p.m. The health fair will feature blood pressure and other health screenings, and a ProMedica dietitian will be on hand to answer questions. Free recipe books using healthy items carried in the store also will be offered.
Improving access to healthy food is part of ProMedica’s Come to the Table collaborative advocacy initiative to address hunger as a health issue. ProMedica has its own programs to end hunger, including the addition of the Garden Grocer at The Flower Market, and works with a wide array of local and national partners on efforts as well.
Media will have the opportunity to interview a ProMedica dietitian about the importance of healthy eating and how living in a food desert affects residents on Fri., Nov. 15, from 2 – 2:30 p.m. at The Flower Market.
