Our volunteer staff fulfills an important function in our hospitals. While performing any number of meaningful duties at our facilities, hospital volunteers provide a human connection to patients and their loved ones and help guide them through the treatment process. By offering their time and talents, our volunteers gain a sense of purpose and fulfillment when they give back to their community.

Age requirements may vary at each hospital but most volunteers must be at least 14 years old to serve in both patient care and non-patient care areas throughout ProMedica hospitals. You will be required to have a PPD 2-step (Tuberculin) test which is given at the hospital and is provided at no cost to you. (If under the age of 18, Parental/Guardian consent is required and is included on the Volunteer Application.) Other health requirements include proof of immunity for Rubella, Rubeola, Mumps and Varicella. Immunizations recommended but not required include Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria or Tdap. Your physician will also be asked to certify that you have been examined during the past twelve months, that you are in good physical, mental and emotional health, that you are free from communicable diseases and that you are able to perform normal volunteer duties associated with the assignment.

Individual hospitals may encourage volunteers to make a minimum commitment of time and service. For example: 4 hours of service once a week for 10 weeks, or the equivalent. Unfortunately, we are not equipped to handle short-term assignments. We will do our best to help you select assignments that make the most of your talents and interests. Not all departments that utilize volunteer services have open positions at the time of your application. Departments/managers reserve the right to interview perspective volunteers and make the final decision about your placement.

The valuable services performed by volunteers often include:

  • Greeting patients as they arrive at the registration areas
  • Escorting patients, family members and visitors within the hospital
  • Clerical duties
  • Information desk
  • Delivering books and magazines to waiting room areas and lobbies
  • Delivering supplies
  • Delivering in-coming mail to patients
  • Volunteering in the hospital’s Gift Shop
  • Pastoral Care support
  • Assisting Patient Care staff

Once you have completed and signed the volunteer application, please return it to the ProMedica hospital or facility where you would like to serve as a volunteer. Your information will be reviewed and your references and health information checked. Once approved, you will be contacted about attending the next scheduled (mandatory) hospital orientation. You will discuss potential volunteer assignments suited to your qualifications with the volunteer services supervisor upon completion of orientation. Rest assured, as a new volunteer you will be paired with a “seasoned” volunteer for training before being sent out on your own.
