A Century of Changing Lives

Ellen Burge Flower, the beloved wife of Stevens Warren Flower, passed away more than 100 years ago. In her memory, Flower willed $20,000 to build a hospital in the downtown Toledo community where he lived. In 1910, the first building of Flower Hospital opened on Collingwood Boulevard and Cherry Street in Toledo. In 1975, Flower Hospital moved to its current location on Harroun Road in Sylvania. Over the last 100 years, the 28 beds of the original hospital have since grown tenfold into one of the area’s leading health care facilities.
Throughout the decades, Flower Hospital has always been committed to providing outstanding patient care. Stevens Warren Flower’s legacy of caring and community lives on today at Flower Hospital, where patients have a place to turn for high-quality care delivered with compassion, trust and understanding.
Please join us this year as we celebrate A Century of Changing Lives.

Doug Dibble’s Story
To these young hockey players, it was the biggest save ever.
Michael and Steven Dibble wanted their dad (and coach) to get well quickly. As did the staff at Flower Hospital. So when Doug Dibble arrived there with signs of a heart attack, the Emergency Center staff quickly stabilized his condition. He was then transported via ProMedica Mobile to the advanced cardiac care unit at The Toledo Hospital. Angioplasty surgery followed, plus several days in intensive care.
But the news was good: Doug Dibble – husband, father of two and coach of 15 – survived.

Judi Young’s Story
Her road to recovery started with us.
Not everyone has their name on a street sign. But Judi Young has
been a driving force in Sylvania since 1978. For more than 20 years
she served as a city council member, concerned with upgrading the
downtown and initiating new recreation and senior services. Judi
cares about her community – a feeling she knows we share at
Hickman Cancer Center.
When doctors recognized melanoma on her knee, Judi immediately
turned to the ProMedica Cancer Institute, a member of ProMedica
Health System.

Am I At Risk for Melanoma?
There is really no way to know for sure if you’re going to get melanoma. Certain factors can make you more likely to get melanoma than another person. However, just because you have one or more risk factors does not necessarily mean you will get melanoma. In fact, you can have all the risk factors and not get melanoma. Or, you can have no known risk factors and still get this cancer.
Your chance of developing melanoma increases with age.

Helping the Heart Through Cardiac Rehab
A rehabilitation program often can help heart patients live better with their disease and recover from medical procedures like surgery and angioplasty.
According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), cardiac rehab services are comprehensive and long-term. They include a medical evaluation; exercise under a doctor's supervision; modification of cardiac risk factors; and education, counseling and behavior modification.
